Chaotic Celt, pernicious pagan, rebellious rake. And those are his good points.

In late 1999 Brendan Gillen’s marriage broke up. He left his four sons and his mountain home in Kimberley, B.C., and headed for Vancouver’s downtown east side, Canada’s poorest and most neglected neighbourhood. There he tried to survive. Being high-strung and sensitive, he was overwhelmed with grief and sought additional help in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre. So much for the Irish being a warrior race.

In this second part of the Losing Mary trilogy, Gillen renews an illicit love affair with his beautiful French-Canadian girlfriend, Giselle, and life seems to be taking a turn for the better. Unfortunately, Giselle’s ex-husband enters the picture—he wants her back. He is a homicidal maniac who carries a gun. Then there are the six persistent biker-types who want to get their hands on Gillen for an incident that happened one cold, wet night in the town of Hope. As well, the Irish crowd is up in arms because he has allowed the dog in the Irish house to drink too much beer. He rubs other clients at the rehab centre the wrong way and irritates a Borneo widow with his eating habits. He gets into a scrap in a muffin shop and now the Vancouver police are after him...and the situation only gets worse.

As usual, chaos swirls around him. Gillen tries to avoid a nervous breakdown and seeks a sober, more spiritual lifestyle.
